practice

the blog 2004 starts here
am narrowing down editing. the film came to-day from
unique photo. the same film that was on backorder when
i tried to order by phone from frank – “my salesman” –
10¢ cheaper per roll. it has been backordered for six
months i was told. i ordered film two months ago. the
only film right now cost $2.40/roll. can we say bait
and switch? now that i have the film will write
wondering what is going on with the price.

want to get back to basics, want to imply people by
the things that are around. i want to walk that
balance between the stunning beauty of the place and
the stuff people put on it. i don’t want picturesque
ruins but do want to deal with out migration and the
resulting sense of place.

like the images i made of the generic buildings that
make up town halls conveniences and bars in these
villages. truly utilitarian , single story buildings
that one can find anywhere. want to continue with this
but also want to stop and park in the towns and walk
more than last time. am pretty proud on how i finally
stop anywhere along the road, i have to work on not
making time and wandering about the towns that i
usually pass through.

have decided to take ubaldo – the mamiya 6 – with a
50mm lens. the choice not only is due to the film
economy but also it is the camera that is most likely
to make it through the trip. all of them are in bad
shape.

the rock hasn’t brought the best of luck for my
cameras. one year when i got back joãozão – my plaubel
makina w67 – after it was “repaired” the hack – forgot
to put in light baffles and thus all my film was
streaked - in 2002 ubaldo’s lens loosened with every
day. i worried that the images would be out of focus –
luckily they were fine.

in 2003 there are dark bands along the side joãozão
but joãozão works best with the buildings that i was
made. it also allows the image to be “read” more. even
the minimal left to right movement allows for little
surprises.

i don’t know if i can trust the camera. it is already
covered with duck tape i may try to work on the
bellows.

headed over to calumet to see if there were other
options. both colin and javier use the pentax 67 and
even though i prefer the mamiya 7 – like rangefinders,
need mobility, and i can hold it steady – i hate the
fact that the widest lens for it without an auxiliary
viewfinder is a 65mm – not wide enough.

the pentax has my favourite 55mm and colin has walked
with it. it also focuses closer than the mamiya
lenses and are cheaper.calumet has a battered 67 with
the lens for about $1000.

as i hefted it i thought i felt something pop. too
heavy, to noisy, don’t think that i could steady it at
all. so while everything else is in place, there is
this minor problem.
