i had forgot...

about the mauze which greated the ferry as it entered port-aux-basques. this was a different climate - it felt 10 degrees colder than yesterday. the colours of the promenade below the hotel were well muted.

about the emptiness. once the ferry traffic was gone - either to the tim horton’s in town or racing up the trans-canada there was no traffic. not only was there no traffic but the spaces between towns, roads everything was much greater. so empty that am radio is required

how weather can change. the mauze lifts in the wreckhouse splitting the distance mountains in half and creating some pretty awesome light - sorry cannot think of any other way of putting it.

about the land, cape breton highlands were stunning but friendly and harmless, the were high, the roads curved a lot but there were road. i look at the continuation of t he appalachian shield here and it distance and wants to be kept that way even the open plain between the tch and the anguille range of the long range mountains isn’t very welcoming.

about the wind. even away from the wreckhouse, both windows had to be opened so that the car wouldn’t act as a sail.

about the smell, how is it that i could go through the cape breton highlands and not smell anything then not five minutes of the boat be overwhelmed but the conifers. i saw more or less the same type of pine for the last two days but only here was the air full of them.

about the water. not the salt water but the ponds and lakes crossing the province, the humber, the exploits, gander lake, little bonne bay, the ponds trapped in the mountains, old pond, gushue’s pond, where there isn’t rock there is water.

that there would still be snow on the tablelands.

that the tch is main street. along the road, not at turn offs, bakeapples, and quilts are being sold. there are people jogging, filling up their jugs with spring water. caravans pulled over for the evening. people biking, now i remember why after simply pulling over on main roads up to now i felt a bit strange, no one on the mainland was doing.

that with all of this the tch isn’t as deadly as i was dreading.
