While checking my email at the Duke, I went to the iceberg finder site and found that there were two in Bonavista – ah the peninsula that I thought that I wouldn’t travel around.

So off we went using the iceberg as an excuse but also to see the place where Giovanni Caboto landed with the Matthew.

Packed a picnic again with the usual suspects baguette, cheese, fruit, water.

Fortitude was needed as the weather was proving to be one of the features of the island, as heading over the isthmus leaving the Avalon the only time the fog wasn’t thick was when it was pouring rain. As soon as we made it to the Bonavista, sun ruled.

An atypical outing as we stopped only in places of tourist import – almost went into the Random Passage set in Bonaventure but there was an admission fee, but did wander Trinity – olde New Founde Land theme park. A diversion in Catalina thinking that I saw an iceberg on the site there.

For some reason, though the usual slamming on the brakes didn’t happen.

Bonavista – the town was huge – planned a trip back if I could stay so that I could wander. It is a place that seemed that was plunked down which is the type of place I like. Did stop to photograph the driving range but this would be a place that would need a full day.

In truth the Bonavista except Trinity would be a place that I would like to explore especially the Trinity Bay side.

Saw the iceberg first – off the light house at Cape Bonavista – a mini Cape Spear, car park hoards of tourists racing in and out of their machines - then the four whales in Trinity Bay, stayed a bit to watch them while others – seemingly lacking in attention span would stay a bit take a snap then leave. They were more patient and more involved in St. Vincent’s.

Then there were the puffins a rock of puffins – a Cape St. Mary’s for puffins only. Again most pulled out their camras made a few snaps – while their kids were throwing rocks off the cliff into the sea.

Picnic overlooking the iceberg.

Photographs were more about the formal aspects of the lighthouse complex and the oddity of the Cabot Monument with a toy replica of the Matthew.

The trip back I became more frustrated, more areas to explore and only two days left. Here there were concrete areas to photograph and the only problem was how to cover them.
